Uganda is the second largest producer of coffee in Africa and the 8th largest in the world. Uganda produces a variety of Robusta and Arabica coffees, AA being the premium grade Arabica and washed Robustas toping the list in their category.
Ugandan coffee is predominantly grown at 900 to 2300 metres above sea level, with temperatures ranging from 15C to 28C. The coffee trees grow on small scale farms and it is organic.
COFFEE GROWING AREAS
ARABICA - Grows around Mt. Elgon in the east, mountain ranges in West Nile, Mt. Rwenzori
and Muhavura ranges in the southwest at an altitude range of 1,300-2,300 metres.
ROBUSTA - Grows around Lake Victoria basin, which is 300 km in radius at varying altitude
of 900-1,500 metres.
UCDA QUALITY CONTROL PROFILE
GRADES - Arabica, Wet Processed: Bugisu's AA, A, AB, PB, B & Wugar.
Arabica, Dry Processed: Drugar.
Robusta, Dry Processed: Screen 19, Scr 18, Scr 17, Scr 15, Scr 14, Scr 13 & Scr12.
SPECIALTY GRADES - Among the speciality grades are washed Robusta and Organic
coffees both Robusta & Arabica (over 20,000 farmers certified).
MOISTURE CONTENT - The moisture standards are 12.5% with a tolerance of ±0.5%.
